We are frequent customers of El Sarape and it is our favorite Mexican Restaurant in the area. Service is fast, the salsa is FABULOUS and the portions are huge! My favorite thing to order is the chicken fajita salad, it has grilled veggies, generous amounts of chicken, and overall is delicious. El sarape has never disappointed.

As unpretentious as they come, you are not paying for the atmosphere. Good, authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices. Great margaritas.

Great service, amazing prices. Come for the food, stay for the beer. Food is delicious and fresh but trading $4.25 for a 24oz Modelo is unreal.

The best Mexican in Green Bay! If you want delicious & fresh Mexican with tons of menu options this is the place. Their salsa is the best and can be bought by the pint of half gallon. The huevos menu options are a must try.

The food is generally good. The price is cheap for what you get.

This is THE best Mexican food I've ever had! The pork tacos with onion and cilantro are phenominal. The beef tostadas are my next fave. Must have an Horchata to drink. I love El Serape!

I ordered take out and they made a mistake on my order. I asked for my money back and they wouldn't give me a refund.

Most consistent Mexican authentic food I have found in Green Bay! Love their salsa, pork tacos, burritos, fajitas, everything I have had I have enjoyed. Very reasonably priced and atmosphere neither great nor bad, right in the middle!! Very large dining area(no bar), so when they are packed be prepared to wait after order is taken is the only drawback I can find.

This is normal Mexican food. The place is clean and service was spot on. Will definitely return when in Green Bay again.

Great fresh salsa, great food. Huge selction, love the enchiladas and tostadas. Only gripe is that they don't always have music playing unless someone is plugging the juke box, and I'm not a huge fan of the flourscent lights. Best Mexican food in Green Bay, IMO.

This place is absolutely amazing. Delicious chips and salsa, and the best burritos in the business. I had the Norteno burrito, legitimately the best burrito I've ever eaten. I caution you, it's super spicy, but it's also filled with delicious steak, beans and rice. It's massive and juicy. This was my first time here and i'll be back again, and again, and again! My wife had the Baja burrito and said hers was amazing too.

Great margarita and salsa. Chips a little greasy. Ordered the #6 combo - enchilada, burrito and taco. Burrito came swimming in white nacho cheese. It basically was a tortilla filled with meat - nothing else. Enchilada was ok, taco sad looking with that goopy cheese. No flavor. Tried to squirt the line on taco and it was too dried out. Disappointing based on reviews. Maybe people don't get out to good Mexican restaurants. Not sure how they got such rave reviews.

The food is wonderful, I have never had anything on the menu I don't like. Everything is amazing! Their burritos are huge with fresh ingredients they have a slice of cheese on the top. Which doesn't over power the taste of burrito. I would suggest carnde asada the spices used in the meat are very flavorful. Another favorite of mine is Chema's special, it's topped with their green sauce which is fantastic. If you want it to be more spicy you can always add red sauce or just mix both sauces! As for the waitstaff, they're friendly and on the ball! One of the waitresses made a drink (which is amazing!) Now when ever I come in and she's there. She knows exactly what drink I want. My fiancée ordered a meal one time with out beans. When he got it, there was beans in it. The waiter was very apologetic, we got our order corrected very fast. That waiter still apologized to us when we visited next. Even after we told him it was ok the 1st time. As you can tell I love this place!

It is nice that they have Negra Modelo on tap, as well as cheap drink and food specials daily and for happy hour. The corn tortillas are decent, as are the fresh cilantro/onion toppings and the salsas (red is hotish, tomatillo is mild). However, they really need to up the rest of their game. Guacamole is either pre-made or made with pre-pureed avocado or, even worse, contains sour cream. On a recent visit, meat ranged from good (rib-eye, lenga) to meh (steak) to oddly flavorless (barbacoa). The massiveness of the burritos and the piles of cheese on the enchiladas don't make up for mediocre fillings. Service is friendly, but often distracted. Try some other mexican places in GB and give El Sarape incentive to improve.

Best Authentic restaurant in town. I seem to alway order the #4 Combo. So much flavor. You have to like the bottles of Coke they serve with your dinner. Very friendly staff however is the service can be slow at times. I'm not a big Mexican food fan, but this would be the exception

Friendly staff and I usually always get the Robert special which is amazing. The fried ice cream is really good as well.

I feel like the Wicked Witch for downgrading.... We'd been going pretty consistently for a while now, whenever I had a craving for carne asada fries. Sadly, we really don't go anymore, and when we do, we remember that we've said we aren't going to go anymore. The fries are ALWAYS undercooked (barely light brown when I ask for well done) and the overall food quality seems to have dropped a bit. Chips and salsa are still tasty. Service is still polite enough, but no real service. Still smells strongly of sanitizer. Sometimes, it burns the nose and it really gets in the way of enjoying a meal, but it's still better than a nasty funk.

Homemade Mexican food at a great price. My husband and I go regularly and the waitstaff recognizes us. I have never had an problem with the service or food. So many delicious things to choose from. El Sarape is my place for comfort food...and when I need a margarita to de-stress. Everyone we take there always asks to go back.

This is the best Mexican I've had in Wisconsin. El Sarape doesn't have the initial curb appeal of some places, being in a strip mall on a busy, chain ridden corridor in Green Bay's east side. It doesn't have the ambiance, the restaurant being a single long tract of lacquered tables and high diner-style booths. However, where it excels is in the food, service and price. This place offers your standard American favorites like burritos and fajitas, but also more traditional offerings like lengua, chile relleno, and tripas. The flavors are pure, the meat of noticeable quality, and the preparation immaculate. Where I fell in love with El Sarape was when I was reading their menu and discovered all of their tacos, enchiladas and and other tortilla-based menu items came with corn instead of flour. That's Mexican. If you've never had a corn tortilla with chicken and a lime on the side, then you've never really had a taco. El Serape delivers on the quality, and before you're done, you'll forget you're in a strip mall in Green Bay! You'll also be treated to attentive service and a bill that (if you don't buy drinks) will probably floor you with how reasonable your meal was. If you're looking for one of the best food experiences in the city, look no further. This place is totally and utterly transcendent.

I went there the other weekend and was pretty unimpressed. I had a special with beef tacos, and the lady had a special with fish tacos. Both were OK but nothing great. Almost a bit bland. The flan for desert was pretty good, I had never had that before.

Good, authentic Mexican food. I live near L.A. and still can't find a place that I like as much as El Sarape. The burritos are the best! I would get the steak burrito, cilantro, cheese on top, verde sauce and guacamole! Go to the one on the east side, went to the one on the west side and didn't like it at all. Plus, the first time I tried to go there they started closing 1/2 hour early so we didn't even bother...left a bad taste in my mouth. You need to come to El Sarape if you are visiting in the area! You will not be disappointed.

If your in Greenbay and looking for excellent, authentic Mexican food; this is your place! As a Mexican from Chicago, the fourth largest community of Mexicans outside of Mexico, I can say that this place rivals any in Chicago. Great service, awesome food, very affordable prices, and huge portions. Perfect storm for overindulgence and a very deep food coma. Just in case there's any doubt, I am Mexican, and love Mexican food.

Great food! I had the faja burrito - fajita goodies wrapped in a a burrito. There were lots of unique items on the menu. I tried my friend's beans and rice- they were a little bland. Good service.

Fantastic food and the best place to eat in Green Bay. The price is right!

Has really good chikn tamale, the tripas taco is to hard and too oily. Tongue taco was good. The food is good if you add salso to it. if you just eat as is just with lime, it kind of tasteless. I will still comeback to try other stuff. overal it is pretty good.

Dear Yelp and all fellow yelp'ers -- THANK YOU. This website is absolutely indispensable -- especially on vacation -- for finding tips on hidden gems out there that we'd otherwise never find out about. El Sarape is a prime example. We found this placed based on a search for mexican food in Green Bay, WI. 4.5 stars across 16 reviews: always a good sign... As always, yelp did not lead us astray. This place is awesome. The portions are simply monstrous: one burrito we ordered is large enough for 3 meals for a normal sized person. The carne asada was cooked to perfection and the chicken in the quesadilla (which included hot peppers which definitely gave it some tasty punch) was seasoned great as well. The fresh chips and salsa are also good. Sizable portions of great food, strong service, and tasty drinks. It does not get any better than this.

Oh... my... gawd.. . Smoking hot world class Mexican on the outskirts of Green Bay in a bad mini-strip mall, poor parking, bad lighting, ya-think-ya-might-be-lost? Oh yea. Pull up and there's a narrow looking restaurant with a not-so-expertly painted sign and little promise. That's the obstacle. But walk inside, and friends, this is a spot of heaven. Packed on a Friday night, that was the first clue. Lots of families, dates, folks hanging out and really having fun. The place was buzzin', friendly, *very* colorful and a wait staff totally on their toes. Folks that really known how to run a restaurant. Now, my first visit with a family friend who'd been hearing good things. I don't get to this part of the country often but when I do I'll be heading back here. And they serve breakfast. What an experience that might be. Reasons for loving this place? I only need two (or 3, or four). Negra Modelo on tap (not too cold though--what your local Old Chicago is sure to do to ruin it) served in a cold glass with lime, fantastic traditional tacos with two corn tortillas, tender meats, raw onions, cilantro and fresh limes to squeeze on top. Doesn't get any better. We tried the rib eye (great choice!), tongue and mixed meat tacos. No side of runny beans and rice with this dish (thank you), no melted cheese running all over the plates--a sure sign of pretenders. And homemade sauces packed with goodness and plenty of onion & cilantro. Nothing outta the can there. The dishes going by were turning our heads until our order came, and then it was time to put the head down and get to work. Proving once again that the best dining is often that which is unexpected. Location, signage, parking. Hell with it. Give me more folks that can pack a meal like this. Be transported from the chilly North to Mexico in a heartbeat with a visit here. Next time, and there will be one, I'll bring a larger crowd with me.

One of the worst experience and lost a regular customer. Came in with two of my other family members in quiet afternoon. There was only 3 tables filled when we came. We always order the same thing, sizzling plate with beef and chicken with flour tortilla w/ rest of the beans ect... They give us 2 plates,... Hello there is 3 people sitting here. Took about 40 minutes for our food. So then it came our "Very HOT" sizzling plate over this burner thing. He said watch out guys is really hot. We were like oh omg okay. :D There is no sizzle or steam from the "very hot" food he just served us. The food was room temperature. The tongs they provided us was not needed. That "very hot" meat we could pick it up with our fingers. We called the manager over told them the issue. We told him to put it back in oven to keep it hot. He said he needs a candle to light it. He changed the candle said it would take min. Waiting another 20 mins to heat it up and didn't do anything. He didn't even say sorry or put it oven. Didn't discount or at least gave us drinks on the house. Also I guess they don't refill water cups? This place is a joke. Went home after few tiny bites , got really dizzy and sick. This place doesn't serve fresh hot food. The manager has poor management skills. I've always put good words about this place but being treated like that isn't acceptable to anyone. This place is not authentic Mexican food.

I loved stopping here with my wife we went here in a date night and I can happily say we enjoyed all of our food there wasn't one part that we didn't wish we ordered. I ordered steak fajitas and I still think they were just as awesome the second day.

You can't go wrong with El Serape! An awesome dinner that won't leave you broke. Authentic food, good and quick service and great margaritas. Location and parking aren't great, but the great experience inside makes up for it. The decor is really fun. We always discuss how it might have been made or where it came from.

First, I have to say I moved here from Texas. I am still on a mission to find decent Tex-Mex or Mexican food up here. So, far this place was decent but certainly not great. The salsa was good and fresh but the chips were very over cooked. The margarita was good and actually had some tequila but they didn't offer a top shelf option. I had the fajitas which were just not right. There were way too many veggies and there was some kind of a tomato sauce on the platter... just wrong. I just wanted fajita meat and the onions like back home. The service was good once they figured out who would be my server. Eric was really very good.

I ordered the shrimp chimichangas. Chips and salsa was very good. The food was presented well and very flavorful. I would eat here again. Only complaint was service was kind of slow. It might have just been the time of day. Went in around 2:30 pm on a Friday.

Had the special margaritas and it was awesome. The burritos are huge with lots of options. Great little place with the home town packer pride mixed with a mexican flair.

What a wonderful building! You can feel the wings of history beating around your ears as you walk through this mansion. The dining room and the salon on the ground floor are both good size, and the ballroom upstairs is good enough for ... a ball. One of the details I love is that the restrooms downstairs has a little lounge area. Both on the gentlemen's and ladies' sides. Feels most excellent.

Seriously, who knew there was gonna be good Mexican food in Green Bay. Cheese,Beer, Brats, Bambi all make sense in the great north woods, but Mexican!?!?! Totally BLEW ME AWAY. I live in Los Angeles, a city where 20% of the people don't even speak English and I still think El Serapes food is better. The price is right, superb quality, and the quantity is more than enough for anyone including your occasional pro football player. Though if you are not a pro football player maybe just take half of it home for a snack later. Just sayin you don't have to eat everything they put in front of you. I know it's cold up there, but you don't have to have a sub-dermal coat on 365. But if you do eat everything El Serape puts in front of you I wouldn't really fault you. I've done it too.

Great food! I love the chicken mole and pork tacos. The salsa is nice and spicy- not that mild out of the jar garbage. The service is friendly and fast as long as the place isn't too busy. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are large. They also have great lunch specials (4.95 for 2 tacos, rice & beans).

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
